Celebrating its British heritage is nothing new for Royal Enfield. *
The company has now launched a 'Pegasus' edition, which will have a limited run of 1,000 units, of its Classic 500. The series pays homage to the RE/WD Flying Flea 125 motorcycle that was made in UK during the Second World War and sports the same maroon and blue Pegasus badge that adorned the Flying Flea. Alongside the limited edition bikes, RE has also introduced a full range of Pegasus apparels and accessories.
Although the launch of the motorcycle is slated for May 30 in India, RE's home market and also its biggest, the focus on the UK is clear with 190 units being earmarked for sale there. As a matter of fact, the initial official announcement of the bike only carried its UK on-road price.
Mechanically, the bike remains unchanged. The nod to the Flying Flea is purely cosmetic in fact, for unlike the original that was designed for deployment behind enemy lines by parachutes, the Pegasus edition isn't cut out for that job. The original Flying Flea was powered by a 125cc 2-stroke single and lightweight enough to be lifted by a single paratrooper. During WWll these purpose built bikes were encased in a steel cradle and parachuted from a plane or carried into battle in assault gliders.
